  • FEEVY
  • y allí encontrarán un oración que dice: “get your feevy now” (haga su Feevy ahora).

Cuatro autores de la Universidad de Meryland, del Departamento de Computación, dicen lo siguiente: “ is a new form of communication in which users can describe their current status in short posts distributed by instant messages, mobile phones, email or the web. Twitter, a popular microblogging tool has seen a lot of growth since it launched in october 2006 the Twitter´s social network. We find that people use microblogging to talk about their daily activities and to seek or share information and connect with each other”.

    The Financial Crisis Simply Explained

    The Financial Crisis Simply Explained
A different look at the fast and loose subprime mortgage market

Mary is the owner of a bar in Los Angeles, CA. To increase sales, she decides to allow her loyal customers - most of them unemployed alcoholics - to drink now and pay later. She keeps and maintains a list of drinks consumed in this way, her check on those customers who receive credit.

Word of Mary's supposed generosity gets out and as a result the number of customers in Mary's bar fills up rapidly. Seeing this increase in custom, and taking advantage of the financial constraints suffered by most of her clients, Mary increases the price of beer and wine, the more drinks are consumed.

A young and dynamic local bank employee acknowledges this debt as an investment and helps Mary to increase her loan limit. He sees no reason to worry that Mary is using the debts of alcoholics as collateral.

Meanwhile at bank headquarters, experts transform these assets into bonds, calling them BEBEBONOS, ALCOBONOS and VOMIBONOS.

These bonds are then invested in security markets worldwide. Nobody really understands what these abbreviations mean but they are guaranteed because they come directly from the bank. Somehow all those involved believe all that this is in good confidence. While the value of the bonds continues to grow and sales remain high, they become very popular in bonds sold to investors.

Then one day, though sales are still increasing, a risk manager in the bank (who eventually loses his job for his negativity), decides that the time has come to urge Mary to start calling in her customer debt or her online credit will be reduced and the interest rate increased.

But it soon becomes apparent that the customers do not have the means to pay their debts. Mary then declares bankruptcy when she realizes she cannot pay her obligations to the bank.

BEBEBONOS and ALCOBONOS suddenly crash in market value by 95 percent and VOMIBONOS fairs not much better, stabilizing its price after losing 80 percent of its value.

The suppliers of Mary Bar, having given generous credit opportunities, and investing in bonds that seem to have value, are caught up in the midst of this tumult. The seller of finished wines also declared bankruptcy and the beer brewer sells up his business to competition.

The bank, meanwhile, was rescued by the government following last-minute consultations with government leaders and representatives of all political parties.

The funds required for this bailout are derived from taxes paid by those who do not drink.

    Economic Conflicts Often Turn Political

    Economic Conflicts Often Turn Political
[Analysis] The cliche may be repeating itself in Venezuela

On Saturday, President Hugo Chavez reduced the national budgeted oil price from US$60 to $40 per barrel and lowered the oil output estimate from about 3.67 million a day to 3.17 million. More than half of government spending is financed by crude oil revenue.

Then he cut the 2009 budget by 6.7 percent to $72 billion and raised the minimum wage in 20 percent. Also, he increased planned government financing from $5.6 billion to $16 billion, and the sales tax from 9 percent to 12 percent.

The bureau in charge of money exchange, CADIVI, now sells the dollar to imports at a parallel rate of 6.50, thrice the official exchange rate of 2.15, to get more bolivars per dollar, thus devaluing the exchange rate. This adjustment and the 3-percent sales tax increase leave the poor with lessened purchasing power. The nation's GDP is feared to have decreased by 3 percent, in contrast with the only 1 percent expected for all of Latin America.

This neoliberal package shall first cause low-intensity conflicts, such as demands from labor unions for benefits. If the government does not meet their economic claims, this will become a political conflict.

This endogenous crisis, unrelated to the global one, can be a great opportunity for the opposition to galvanize the currently scattered social struggles to achieve a program that enables dialogue and find a long-sought balance.

If dialogue finds itself broken in this polarized society, it's not, as Chavez suggests, because of class struggle, but because there is a society concerned about how the country is affected by the looming economic crisis. Nevertheless, the President has tried to turn such a polarized society into a class struggle of so-called "revolutionaries" and the "oligarchs" or "Piti-Yankees," which he considers his enemies.

Recently he has behaved aggressively towards six opposition figures who won state government seats and a number of new mayors. This assault against his rivals, particularly against one governor who had nearly won the presidency, is a strategy to eliminate a potential future rival.

President Chavez sees policy as war, and assumes that the enemy cannot shoot with weapons, as in Cuba, so he shoots with profanities. If he goes on with such behavior, the 30 percent of poor people who always put their hopes in government may change their minds when they notice that the President has been manipulating them.
